Watchtower Disaster Relief – Donation or Profit?

anonymous

The Watchtower disaster relief is filled with information you do not know.  At a recent announcement that was given to all congregations it was directed that donations to assist victims of the Katrina Hurricane was to be placed in the general contribution called the “Worldwide Work” of Jehovah’s Witnesses.  The WWW is a general donation fund that is distributed at the sole discretion of leadership of Jehovah’s Witnesses.  The WWW is used to buy paper to make literature, build new branch offices as well as fund the defense of child molesters within the organization.  A portion of this money is also used for disaster relief for members that are affected by natural disasters.  The question remains how much money is actually spent on the victims?  When Regional Build Committee (volunteer building group of JWs) comes in to rebuild a home of a member the owner signs an agreement.  That agreement states that any insurance payment check will be signed over to “Worldwide Work” of Jehovah’s Witnesses when received.  RBC comes in and rebuilds a home with volunteer labor and some donated materials at a fraction of the cost and then the owner is requested to send the full rebuild insurance check to WWW.  All homes are required to carry insurance so it results in a very profitable enterprise for home office.  Then there are Kingdom Halls, they too carry insurance that pays for the damage that is rebuilt with volunteer labor and often donated materials.  So when a KH is destroyed who profits? Home office again.  If there is a rebuild with additional costs the home office will not rebuild for free they make a loan with interest at 3% and then when the loan is paid off the KH belongs to home office.  So how much WWW money is actually used?  Very little.

It is a great generosity by local brothers and sisters that pitch in and do the work, it is a great kindness for them to donate thousands of dollars in funds, materials, clothing, food, and effort to support the friends.  No one can depreciate that wonderful effort.  But the facts show when the organization raises money for a disaster they make a tremendous amount of profit that is never spent on those in the disaster area.  In most cases with insurance payments they make a killing.  As you will note there are no statements provided or other information about how WWW money is spent toward the disaster or anything else in the organization.

The Red Cross on the other hand provides a financial statement that shows in detail how every penny they take in is spent.  You can access it from their website as they make it available to anyone that wishes to know.  You in the end will be able to know exactly how many dollars they spent on Katrina as they will be happy to let everyone know the tremendous amount of money and volunteer effort that was expended to help others.  They do this for every disaster they serve.

So the question remains if the Watchtower organization makes several million dollars that ultimately end up in general funds when members donate to a disaster could it be considered dishonest?  The Red Cross has helped billions of people around the world whenever disaster strikes.  When people are moved by the suffering of others they donate to help those in need that are part of the disaster.  If an individual wishes to contribute to a charity or religious group knowing that money will not benefit those hurt by the disaster that is their prerogative, but if you specifically want to help victims of Katrina make sure your money is designated for that specific endeavor.  Profiteering off a disaster is the ultimate in dishonesty.  If this is not the case then we would suggest a full financial statement of money received for Katrina and how much was actually spent on the friends to be provided by Jehovah’s Witnesses.  This of course is impossible as all members have been instructed to donate to the WWW contribution box marked for general funds so now it is untraceable.  YOU WILL NEVER KNOW WHERE THE MONEY WENT….Ever wonder why members are always told to donate to a general fund when a disaster occurs?  THINK…. Make sure if you are moved to help victims of a disaster that every penny of the money will actually go to help those victims.  It will make profiteering from the suffering of others much harder to do as well as make sure your money is used to help and not based on trust.

I'll type out word for word the question box from the Canadian January 2005 Kingdom Ministry (pg.3):

QUESTION BOX

What is the best way to make contributions for the benefit of needy brothers in other lands?

At times, we hear about brothers in another land who have come into material need because of persecution, disaster, or other difficult circumstances. Some brothers have been moved to send funds directly to the branch offices in such lands, requesting that the money be used to help a certain individual, a particular congregation, or a designated building project.-2 Cor. 8:1-4.

While such loving concern for fellow believers is commendable, often there are needs that are more urgent than those that the contributor has in mind. In some cases, the designated need has already been cared for. Of course, we can be confident that when contributions are sent to the local branch office for the worldwide work, the Kingdom Hall Fund, or disaster relief, those donated funds will be used as directed by the contributor. The brothers in all the branches have been thoroughly trained to respond quickly to unanticipated needs. In all cases, the branch keeps the Governing Body informed regarding the matter. If additional assistance is needed, the Governing Body may invite nearby branches to help or funds may be sent directly from headquarters.-2 Cor. 8:14, 15.

Therefore, all contributions intended for the worldwide work, building projects in other lands, or disaster relief should be sent to the branch office in the land in which you live, either through the congregation or directly. In this way, "the faithful and discreet slave," through the organizational arrangements set in place by the Governing Body, cares for the needs of the worldwide brotherhood in an orderly manner. -Matt. 24:45-47; 1 Cor. 14:33,40.
Now I recall them announcing at the service meeting at a later time, to not even put "disaster relief" on the memo line of the cheque: just "world wide work". If only I had access to that letter.

What the Watchtower IS doing about the Katrina disaster from http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/6/98053/1.ashx :

The Disaster Relief Committee at Patterson organized 3 meetings this past Memorial Day, Monday September 5, 2005. The meetings were held in Lake Charles, Louisiana; Bossier City, Louisiana; and Ball, Louisiana. Over 1,200 elders were in attendance from Louisiana, Missouri, Arkansas, and Texas. I took horrible notes, but want to share a few things.

The elder opening the meeting emphasized the importance of confidentiality. All cell phones were to be turned off, except their's in case they received a call from Patterson. Confidentiality was stressed, they don't want family members or publishers to know the details of this meeting. WTS will release reports later through the proper channel.

WTS Disaster Relief called the meeting to inform local elders of what the current situation is and what will be happening in the future.

8 Regional Building Committees (RBCs) are working together as a Hurricane Katrina Relief Committee (HKRC). Patterson is in contact with this group at least twice a day every day planning and organizing.

Day one after the hurricane a few brothers from the HKRC went into New Orleans/Slidell area and began assessing damage to Kingdom Halls. The elders divided parts of southeast Louisiana into zones, my notes are sketchy and memory missing a few points, but in one zone 5 KHs are gone, 2 heavily damaged. Around Lake Pontchartrain 7 KHs are gone, 7 moderate damage, and some with light damage. On day two the brothers did more assessments, but martial law was put in place and they had to leave.

The elder handling one of the parts was very critical of Red Cross. He said the HKRC was going into shelters in Louisiana and Mississippi to identify and get JWs out. At Red Cross shelters they encountered problems, Red Cross officials wouldn't let them in. The brother said Red Cross gets money for every person they shelter so they didn't want JWs leaving the shelter. The elders dressed as if they were evacuees in order to gain entrance into the shelters and then once inside they put on their district convention lapel badges and walked around the shelters. The elder was very proud of this deception, and several elders in attendance seemed satisfied with the ploy. All of the JWs that were in shelters are now in JW homes. There are 3,000 - 4,000 displaced JWs, there are 8 missing from New Orleans. Patterson wants elders to get the name and home congregation of displaced JWs that begin attending KHs in new locations. This point was stressed. My thoughts are that WTS can't afford to let any JWs use this as an opportunity to fade or stop attending meetings. From the way the point was made to get publisher information and report it to WTS, methinks they are more concerned with losing members than members' welfare.

100% of Spanish JWs are accounted for because they were at their district convention, while only 90% of English JWs are accounted for...no doubt because they weren't at their convention. I don't see how those percentages match up to the numbers of missing they gave. Again, I think they are just trying to use this as another means to guilt people into going to the meetings and assemblies/conventions.

WTS says this is the biggest thing they have had to deal with. They need the cooperation of all congregations for Jehovah's glory. The HKRC will organize 40 departments working out of Kenner and Metairie. Patterson has a Communication Center setup in Tulane and 5 satellite offices (30-35 people per office) around the gulf area. These 40 departments will have a total staff of 500 personnel. There is a wireless computer hub being setup in Houston. At this hub, they are developing software just for Katrina relief, and they also have a dedicated line to Patterson. When construction begins on KHs and JW homes there will be approximately 5,000 - 7,000 construction volunteers used. No mention of where these volunteers will come from. My guess is perhaps workers from KH construction and Branch construction.

They concluded by telling us to prepare, offer, and wait for direction. They repeated getting names and congregation info of displaced JWs. And they told us to tell know one of the details of the meeting, and reports will be released through the proper channel.

And so there you have it.
