Scare Tactics and Misplaced Loyalty Used by the Watchtower

A common characteristic of a “spiritually abusive system is that a misplaced sense of loyalty is fostered and even demanded.”  “A common way this is accomplished is by setting up a system where disloyalty to or disagreement with the leadership is construed as the same thing as disobeying God. …Once again, this makes the wall around the system thicker and makes it more difficult to leave."  Authors David Johnson & Jeff VanVonderen go on to explain in their book, The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse:
 
The Paranoia Fear Of Jehovah's Witnesses

Jehovah’s Witnesses seem to be fearful of everything: from Smurf cartoons, Halloween, Christmas to serious religious beliefs involving the Battle of Armageddon, the end of the world and the fear of “apostates.” Even non-Jehovah’s Witness beliefs such as Hell, Trinity, Cross (words that can even send chills down the back of a Witness) can send a Jehovah’s Witness into “paranoia” fear.

 
How Jehovah’s Witness Shunning Affects Our Lives

Those of us who left Jehovah’s Witnesses have all experienced the Watchtower policy of “shunning” those who leave on their own or are disfellowshipped. Shunning is a painful experience because it prevents your friends and relatives from speaking to you or inviting you to normal family functions. In some cases, shunning even goes so far as the Jehovah’s Witness relatives throwing away the personal letters of their loved ones who left the organization for fear that their personal “spiritually” will be corrupted if they even so much as “read” a letter from a shunned loved one. It’s so sad how many families I personal know of that have been divided over this policy.
