I'm in the middle of an email discussion with a few JW's about the import of the following statement from the new July 2009 Awake! ""God allows each person the freedom to choose how he or she will respond. No one should be forced to worship in a way that he finds unacceptable or be made to choose between his beliefs and his family.""

If I start a conversation with God, does that make him real?

If I think I'm special, does that make it so?

If I want to be chosen, could I be?

I was baptized in 1986 age 16 on the 'invitation' of my father. Yes  - unluckily I committed myself to the spirit-directed organization just one year after the revised baptism question deftly substituted the Watchtower Society for the Holy Spirit. I always felt gently pressured and subtly coerced into baptism by peer pressure, family expectation and the complete absence of any other world view. And yet clearly it was something I 'volunteered' for. And a few weeks ago I read the most eloquent explanation for what high control groups are doing to children.

The Watchtower Society fought many court battles to establish the rights of their members to actively publish and proselytize their message, which is ultimately a 'multiplying ministry' seeking to recruit new members.

The relaunch of the new freeminds website gave me pause for thought. I've been involved with Randy and others over the past few months trying to give birth to a website - grown men feeling all the emotion and pain of childbirth - no really. But seeing the results makes it all worthwhile, and now the infant website needs its first innoculation. But this ain't no ordinary infant.

A survey this week by Gallup on the eve of Charles Darwins' 200 birthday draws some interesting correlations between adult Americans education, religiosity and knowledge of Darwins' Theory.

Being raised as a Jehovah's Witness meant my knowledge of Darwin was absorbed through the filter of the Creation Book

This phrase was kinda popular when I started to waken up from the cult sleep I had been in. The phrase circulated the Internet community quicker than a laughing baby could perform the evolution of dance. Mainly cuz there was only a few people on the interwebs in those days. The phrase speaks to total assimilation by the conquering forces, even though they mistranslated the killer ending to great humorous effect. And that for me is the Watchtower Society - they desire total assimilation, mess up the ending and it all ends up as a universal joke - everybody is in on the joke except them.
